About Us
The Voices For Change process perfectly addresses Lenawee County's recently developed goal to cut the drop-out rate in half. The youth driven process developed as a result of an asset survey that said 7th-11th graders did not feel that the adults/community valued them has empowered hundreds of students in its six years of existence. VFC involves a diversity of students interested in using their voice to identify issues facing today's youth and then brainstorm and implement solutions to those issues. Through focus groups we have learned that the number one reason youth stay in school is engagement. Youth are actively engaged in their schools, community, and their own learning through VFC.
Lenawee County
Anti-Bullying Task Force
A county-wide task force to provide awareness; and to listen to student, educator, and community concerns regarding the issue of bullying and anti-aggressive behavior; and to provide community wide training to address those concerns. The Task Force also provides an outlet to educate the community and to share anti-aggressive programming throughout the school districts.
Lenawee Urban Exchange
In an effort to address the growing need for essential staples like clothing amongst Lenawee County youth, CIS, in partnership with Goodwill and the LISD TECH Center students, developed Lenawee Urban Exchange reflecting the vision of a former Lenawee student who noticed the growing need amongst his peers for clothing. LUE is student run - conceptualized during the 2010-2011 school year to anonymously provide clothing selected by students for students in need... Like borrowing clothes from a friend.
The program pairs a caring adult with a student who needs a positive role model in his/her life. Adult volunteers commit to having lunch, then spending time reading, talking or playing a game with a student once a week throughout the school year.
CIS is responsible for promoting the importance of Youth Asset Development among Lenawee's youth. Research identifies 40 Developmental Assets that have a powerful, positive impact on young people.
Children and teens with more of these assets get involved in fewer risky behaviors and are much more likely to exhibit positive values, such as leadership, good health, and success in school.
